Spivey’s Corner, a small town outside Fayetteville, is calling quits to its historic hollerin’ contest.
Hollerin’ isn’t just for Gwen Stefani, and it never was. This communication technique dates back hundreds of years in the rural South, where it was used to shout short messages between farms. Spivey’s Corner has kept the tradition alive since 1969 with its Hollerin’ Contest, but low attendance in recent years has put a damper on the fun, and they’ve suspended it this year.
We think that’s a shame, not just because it’s one more time-honored Southern tradition gone by the wayside, but because a good holler is good for the soul...and your health!
Take a listen to a real holler or two! You’ll be glad you did.
